Mary Schaffer Boat Signage

The story is a reminder that long before today's scenic boat cruises and visitors heading toward Spirit Island, this remote lake was a place reached only by those willing to venture deep into the unknown wilderness.

Mary Schaffer Boat Signage

Mary Schaffer Boat Signage

The Mary Schaffer boat signage at Maligne Lake tells one of the most fascinating stories in the history of the Canadian Rockies, connecting visitors to the woman whose determination helped introduce this spectacular wilderness to the world.

Positioned near the historic lakeshore and boat departure area at Maligne Lake, the interpretive sign typically honors Mary Schaffer Warren, a pioneering explorer, botanist, photographer, and writer whose journey into this remote valley changed the future of tourism in the region. In the early 1900s, Maligne Lake remained largely unknown to non-Indigenous explorers, hidden deep within rugged mountain terrain and surrounded by dense forests, glaciers, and towering peaks.

The story explains how Mary became determined to find a mysterious lake she had heard described by local Indigenous communities. With the help of Samson Beaver, who sketched a hand-drawn map showing the route, she organized a challenging horseback expedition through difficult wilderness terrain. In 1908, after days of navigating rough valleys, crossing rivers, and pushing through untouched backcountry, her expedition finally arrived at the shoreline of what we now know as Maligne Lake.

Interpretive panels often describe the incredible moment she first saw the lake stretching out before her - a vast turquoise body of glacial water surrounded by dramatic peaks and hanging glaciers. Visitors reading the sign begin to understand how extraordinary this discovery was during an era when reaching this area required true wilderness travel, long before roads, parking lots, or organized tours existed.

The signage often highlights that Mary and her companions built a simple raft to explore the lake itself, carefully mapping its shoreline and documenting what they found through photographs, sketches, and journals. Her later return expedition in 1911 helped officially survey the lake, and she went on to name many surrounding mountain features still recognized on maps today.

Standing beside the modern cruise boats at Maligne Lake, the Mary Schaffer signage creates a powerful contrast between past and present. What visitors now experience as a comfortable journey across calm water once required weeks of backcountry travel, incredible perseverance, and a spirit of exploration that helped make Maligne Lake one of the most iconic destinations in the Canadian Rockies.
